Title: Further evidence on gender and academic rank
Abstract: This paper presents an analysis of the relative attainment of various academic ranks for males and females at a large Midwestern university in the 1983–1987 time period. Using both cross-sectional and longitudinal specifications, we find no evidence of differential treatment by gender when the level of analysis is the university as a whole, with the gender differential in the attainment of higher ranks attributable to differences in levels of experience and research output. Evidence of differential treatment is found, however, when the sample is disaggregated.
