This success has been largely due to improvement in immunosuppression beginning with the introduction of cyclosporine A (CsA) in the early 1980s. However, graft loss resulting from rejection and nephrotoxicity remain significant problems. A limited supply of donor kidneys in the face of increasing demand compels transplantation surgeons to be judicious in the application of immunosuppressive regimens to make the most of a rare resource.
