Abstract: ‘Haemopoietic stem cell transplantation’ (HSCT) is the term used to describe the collection and transplantation of haematopoietic stem cells from bone marrow, peripheral blood or umbilical cord blood. HSCT is established therapy for congenital or acquired disorders of the haematopoietic system and for haematological malignancies. The biological properties of haematopoietic stem cells that facilitate transplantation include their capacity to proliferate and differentiate into the entire lymphohaematopoietic system, their ability to migrate to the bone marrow space following intravenous injection, and their maintained viability despite cryopreservation, prolonged storage and thawing for re-infusion.
