Title: Identification of peach cultivars with pollen isozymes
Abstract: The pattern of variation of 14 enzyme systems was studied in 81 peach cultivars using starch gel electrophoresis of pollen extracts. Variation among cultivars was observed in 4 enzymes: esterase, isocitrate dehydrogenease, malate dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase. The isozyme phenotypes of 13 cultivars were unique. The number of cultivars that could be individually distinguished increased to 48 when using 6 morphological characteristics in addition to the isozymes. The group of freestone cultivars was less variable in the polymorphic isozymes than the group of clingstones. The usefulness of electrophoresis for peach cultivar identification is discussed.
