Title: Posttransplant donor antigen-specific hyporeactivity in human transplantation
Abstract: I mmune tolerance to alloantigens has been induced in laboratory animals, thus allowingsuccessful transplantation without long-term use of immunosuppression.‘In clinical transplantation, lifelong immunosuppression is almost always necessary.+s5 However, anecdotal reports of long-term graft survival after all immunosuppression has been stopped (in noncompliant patients) suggest that, under certain circumstances, graft survival in humans can be achieved with little or no immunosuppression.G A major problem for clinical investigators today is defining situations in which immunosuppression can be successfully tapered or withdrawn. This article focuses on the potential use of immunologic parameters to predict long-term graft success and to select patients who could safely reduce or stop their immunosuppression.
