Abstract: Abstract In 1855 an exhibition of photography was organised in Glasgow for the visit of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. The aim of the exhibition was made clear in the notice inviting contributions which appeared in the Liverpool Photographic Journal on 14 July, that year. It was to be no less than ‘illustrative of the present state of the art’. This exhibition of photography came between the very first, held in London in December three years previously by the Society of Arts, and the Art Treasures Exhibition in Manchester, two years after Glasgow, when photographs were displayed with painting and sculpture. In Paris 1855 was the year according to Nadar, that it rained photographers.
