Title: The hemoglobin of Biomphalaria glabrata: Chemical composition and some physicochemical properties
Abstract: 1.|The amino acid composition of Biomphalaria glabrata hemoglobin was determined. 2.|The isoelectric pH of the molecule determined by isoelectric focusing had a value of 4.60. 3.|Sedimentation and diffusion coefficients were determined in the analytical ultracentrifuge to be s20,wo = (35.19 ± 0.49) × 10−13 s and D20,wo = (1.75 ± 0.03) × 10−7 cm2·s−1. 4.|The apparent partial specific volume at 20°C obtained from the pycnometric method was 0.722 cm3·g−1 and from the chemical composition was 0.73 cm3 · g−1. 5.|The molecular weight in acetate buffer at pH 5.0, calculated from the measured sedimentation and diffusion coefficients, and partial specific volume was (1.75 ± 0.06) × 106. 6.|The calculated value for the maximum degree of hydration was 1.91 g of water per gram of protein. 7.|Some comparisons were established between this hemoglobin and human hemoglobin A.
