Title: A rapid tabulational method for the algebraic expansion of large determinants
Abstract: This paper describes an algebraic method of expanding a determinant of any order greater than two by the use of an empirical tabulational procedure. Conventional methods of algebraic expansion, using either minors or cofactors, could lead to manipulation errors which are hard to detect. Furthermore, if an error occurs early in the expansion it will propagate pyramidally throughout the subsequent expansion of lower‐ordered minors or cofactors. The method described in this paper follows a few simple rules in the manipulation of the integer suffices of the array elements of a determinant. Work is carried out systematically in a ‘relaxation mode’ using a tabulated form. Errors are easily detected and, for the expansion of higher‐order determinants, work can be carried out in instalments to suit the time available.
