Title: Information based strategies in the design of mechatronic systems
Abstract: The term mechatronics is increasingly being used to described complex systems in which elements of mechanical engineering are integrated with electronic engineering and computer technology. In this context, mechatronics is not a separate, self contained engineering discipline but must be considered as a strategy within the overall engineering design process. However, the complexity of a mechatronic system may well be such that conventonal approaches to design and project management could prove inadequate. Instead, an information based structure is suggested for the design process centred around the use of series of linked 'modules'. These modules both define and encompass the necessary technologies and can be implemented in either a 'top down' or 'bottom up' mode.
