Title: System definition study: Solar Heating and Cooling Commercial Project. Interim report
Abstract: The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), has funded a three-phase study of solar and load-managed heating and cooling systems for commercial and light industrial applications. The first of its three phases is now complete. The first phase effort, a system definition study, was conducted by Arthur D. Little, Inc. Its intent was to identify potential commercial applications of solar and load management systems, and then select several projects for continuation into a detailed design phase and ultimately into construction. Candidate projects were proposed by electric utilities which selected building and system concepts and which also assembled project teams. Evaluation of the proposals was based upon criteria which were developed especially for this EPRI project, and which were based in part on a survey of the potential commercial solar market. The applications definition effort of this study determined market size and characteristics for a variety of commercial buildings and for the process industries. Energy-use patterns and temperature requirements for these applications were also considered in identifying promising areas for solar augmentation of the energy supply. The seven projects ultimately selected for continuation into a second phase and detailed design included a delicatessen, schools, and office buildings.
