Title: Effects of photoperiod on growth and reproduction inArchachatina ventricosa(Gould, 1850) under indoor rearing conditions
Abstract: Summary Archachatina ventricosa (Gould, 1850) snails with an average body weight of 53.37 g and 68.50 mm shell length were reared under five photoperiods (24L:0D; 18L:6D; 12L:12D; 6L:18D and 0L:24D) during two successive experiments (growth and reproduction) of 3 months each in order to determine the effects of photoperiod on growth and reproduction. The longest photoperiods (24L:0D; 18L:6D) stimulated reproduction while shorter photoperiods (6L:18D; 0L:24D) inhibited it. The photoperiod 12L:12D stimulated growth and resulted in a lower food intake and reduced mortality. The photoperiod 18L:6D seemed to provide the best conditions for reproduction in this snail species. The optimal photoperiod for growth and reproduction in A. ventricosa differs from those found in European land snails.
