Title: Developing an active geriatric service in Scunthorpe
Abstract: This paper describes the effect of a defined age-related admission policy in a small geriatric unit with 169 beds serving an above-65 population of 18,540. Since the completion of the 60-bedded Acute Assessment Unit in October 1976 in the Scunthorpe General Hospital, the Geriatric Unit has admitted most of the elderly patients aged 70 years and above. With the help of a 40 place Geriatric Day Unit and a further 109 beds in peripheral hospitals, the Unit is providing comprehensive care to the elderly in the sector. In 1978 the total discharges were 1593, the average length of stay was 35·5 days and turnover per bed per year was 9·1: 3·5% of the total admissions were from other units, out of which only six came from the Medical Unit. The “blocked bed” problem has been solved permanently and the waiting list has disappeared.
