Title: Growth behavior of silicalite and ZSM-5 seed crystals in different reaction media
Abstract: The crystal growth of silicalite and ZSM-5 is studied by seeding syntheses mixtures with these crystals. The observations indicate two different patterns of crystallization. Ordered growths and subsequently regular overgrowths are found in sufficiently dilute syntheses mixtures. In concentrated syntheses, nucleation in solution dominates, and the initial stage of breeding cannot be observed. Nucleation preferably takes place on the seed crystal surface, and the seed crystal direction controls the growth of new crystals, so that a regular overgrowth (epitaxial growth) is created. The usual random formations of embedded crystals on seed surfaces can be observed when nucleation also occurs in solution. The indirect mechanism of initial breeding is not consistent with the preferential seed crystal growth.
