Title: Restrictions on chaotic inflation from spacetime topology
Abstract: Abstract A non-trivial spacetime topology may hamper a realization of the chaotic inflation scenario a la Linde because of the existence of topologically inequivalent field configurations. At the same time a non-trivial spacetime topology gives rise to a topological vacuum polarization (the Casimir effect) for these configurations, and permits an inflationary scenario a la Starobinsky. This holds true both in ordinary field theories and in N = 1 supergravity.
