Title: Literary and Colloquial Readings in Shanghai Dialect
Abstract: This article is based on contemporary Shanghai dialect. In order to discuss the literary and colloquial readings of initials and rhymes in Shanghai dialect, we examine a large body of evidence, including A Grammar of Colloquial Chinese, as Exhibited in the Shanghai Dialect by Joseph Edkins, research on Chinese phonology by Bernhard Karlgren and so on. The article is mainly concerned with the following contrasts: -o / -ᴀ, -ᴀ / -ᴇ, -o / -uᴀ, -ã / -ǝŋ, - / -ã, ȵ- / z- or l- or ɦ-, m- / v- or Ø-, ŋ- or ȵ- / ɦ- or Ø-, k- / ʨi- etc. Through competition among the literary and colloquial readings, we look for clues to historical developments.
