Title: Aspects of hierarchical galaxy formation involving gas dynamics
Abstract: We try to test the viability of hierarchical structure formation theories, e.g., cold dark matter, through numerical simulations that include gas dynamics. Gas dynamics is crucial to obtaining realistic results to many problems in galaxy formation. We consider applications over the range from individual galaxy features (polar rings) to spiral and elliptical galaxies to quasars and clusters. Frequently we find that the common wisdom on many aspects of hierarchical galaxy formation is upset by the inclusion of realistic gas dynamics.
