The word<i>psychoanalysis</i>conjures up many mental images, not all of which are favorable and many of which are pejorative, but this book, I believe, might delight both the advocates of psychoanalysis and its most formidable opponents. The writing is lucid, the material is clearly delineated, and no polemics are involved. Anna Freud is portrayed "warts and all." What Robert Coles has done so well is to illuminate through vignettes a life dedicated to caring for others—first Anna Freud's father, Sigmund Freud, during his long bout with cancer, and then, throughout her long and productive life, children from all walks of life, including children escaping from Nazi brutalities and those of bombed-out Great Britain.Read More
