Abstract: This study explored how three transgender athletes experienced sport. Grounded in a queer-feminist perspective, we used life history methodology, and each athlete participated in two interviews. The data analysis revealed three overarching themes: sport and sex segregation, safe spaces for sport participation, and trans inclusion in sport. We present the findings using a narrative approach and techniques from creative non-fiction to illustrate how these trans athletes navigated and negotiated sport's rocky terrain. Their narratives reveal the joys and challenges of balancing their gender identity and sport participation. Overall, their sport life stories exposed the inability of the gender and sex binaries to fully explain the diversity of gender and sex, and the inability of segregation by sex in sport to fully meet the needs of all athletes.
