Title: Orientational ordering in two-dimensional athermal solutions
Abstract: Formation of a nematic phase in two-dimensional athermal solutions of rodlike particles is analysed using a lattice model with a fixed number of possible orientations on the lattice. In the case of a square lattice the transition from the isotropic to the ordered state is a second-order phase transition (in contrast to the case of a three-dimensional cubic lattice where the phase transition is of first order). On the other hand, on a hexagonal lattice (with three possible orientations of particles in the plane) the system assumes the ordered state via a first-order phase transition.
