Title: The Seed Proteins of Kowhai, Sophora microphylla AIT.
Abstract: The seed of Kowhai (Sophora microphylla Ait.) possesses a tough, dense seedcoat which accounts for about 40 % of the seed mass. Allowing for this, the total extractable protein from the seed represents 21-22 % of the dry matter of the embryo. The major components of the total seed protein are globulins and albumins, the latter constituting 35 Ofo of the saLtextractable protein. Prolamins and glutelins together represent about 10 Ofo of total seed protein. The albumin, globulin and prolamin fractions were examined by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and shown to be composed of polypeptides of characteristic sizes. No evidence was obtained to indicate the presence of Legumin or vicilin in the globulin fraction from this species.
