Title: Orbital complications of sinusitis in the pediatric population
Abstract: Periorbital and orbital infections occur frequently in the pediatric population. Schramm et al1 reported that 75% of patients with these infections have associated paranasal sinusitis; however, other series of periorbital infections report sinusitis-associated diagnoses in only 29% .’ Although periorbital cellulitis resolves promptly with aggressive antibiotic treatment, orbital cellulitis is a more serious disease. Before the antibiotic era, Gamble3 reported 20% of patients went blind on the affected side, and 17% died of meningitis, brain abscess, or cavernous sinus thrombosis. Since the introduction of antibiotics, the number of serious sequelae has decreased dramatically, with series reporting complications as low as 5% .lr4 Orbital septum
