With the exception of Crompton's study of the treatment of children in thirteen Worcestershire workhouses from 1834 to 1871 (Crompton 1997), few detailed local studies have been made of the experiences of workhouse children even though children formed one of the largest groups in the workhouse. Many of these children were ill or sickly on admission or suffered illnesses while in the workhouse, yet studies of the conditions and treatment of sick children in the workhouse are scarce. The article aims to provide an insight into the way such children were treated by the Leicester union. The first section focuses on conditions for sick children in the main Leicester workhouse; while the second section explores whether the children's health improved when they were removed from the overcrowded urban workhouse to new cottage homes in a rural location.Read More
