Abstract: From 1997, people covered by the Dutch Health Insurance Act will have to pay 20% of the cost of certain medical treatments themselves. For instance, patients will pay about DFl 9 (US$4·5) a day when in hospital to a maximum contribution of DFl 208 annually, with reductions for the chronically ill. The plans are part of the budget Health Minister Els Borst-Eilers presented at the opening of parliament last week.
