Abstract: In this two-part article the properties of semiconductors are discussed, as well as the relations of these properties to formal solid-state and conduction theory and applications to such devices as transistors, rectifiers, and photocells. Some recent findings on the properties of silicon and germanium, and a discussion of some of the more modern techniques for making semiconductor devices are included.
