Title: 180: Emergency Physician Dysphagia Assessment in Acute Stroke Patients
Abstract: Dysphagia following acute stroke occurs in up to 51% of patients and is an independent predictor of poor outcomes, including aspiration pneumonia and prolonged hospitalization. Dysphagia screening is required for all stroke patients, and since administering oral medication and nutrition to some acute stroke patients in the emergency department (ED) is desirable, the ability to perform a simple, validated dysphagia screen in the ED would be valuable.
