Abstract Three positions in the Orion Nebula - near the Trapezium, 3 arcmin, 25 arcsec south and 6 arcmin, 5 arcsec north of the Trapezium - were observed in an attempt to measure any depletion in oxygen that might be caused by the formation of dust grains in the outer parts of the nebula. No such depletion is found. Without the errors of observation, the O/H ratio is the same for all three regions; a variation greater than 60% cannot be justified. Neutral helium is very important in the outermost position observed, where the He(+)/H(+) ratio is less than half the value found in the central part of the nebula. In the outermost region oxygen is much more highly ionized as compared with planetary nebulae of similar low helium ionization.
