{'伊吹山南麓に位置する滋賀県米原市（旧伊吹町）寺林地域には，寺林I火山灰層および寺林II火山灰層を挟在する中部更新統の寺林層が分布する．寺林I火山灰層と寺林II火山灰層は，高島沖ボーリングコア中のBT60，BT59に対比されており，寺林層の堆積期は酸素同位体比曲線のステージ8の寒冷期から7の温暖期にあたる．本層からは，チョウセンゴヨウPinus': [0], 'koraiensis,': 'toringo,': [12], 'キイチゴ属Rubusなどの冷温帯～亜寒帯のマツ科常緑針葉樹とカバノキ属・バラ科落葉広葉樹を主体とする大型植物化石とともに花粉化石，昆虫化石が産出する．これらに基づく古環境は，水生植物ホソバミズヒキモPotamogeton': [13], 'octandrusが生育し，それらに依存するノグチアオゴミムシLithochlaenius': [14], 'ヨモギ属Artemisiaなど陽生の草本類が生え，ウラジロモミ，シラカンバ，ミズメの林が広がっていた．主として北側の山地下部では，尾根筋や崩壊斜面にコメツガ，緩傾斜面にウラジロモミ，ハシバミCorylus': [22], 'heterophylla,': [23], 'ズミ，キハダPhellodendron': [24], 'amurense,': [25], '谷筋にはサワグルミPterocarya': [26], 'rhoifolia,': [27], 'オニグルミJuglans': [28], 'mandshurica': [29], 'var.': [30], 'sachalinensisが生育していた．林床には草本類のカラマツソウ属Thalictrum,': [31], 'ツリフネソウImpatiens': [32], 'textoriなどが生え，オサムシ属Carabusが生息する環境が存在した．さらに山地上部ではチョウセンゴヨウ，コメツガ，ダケカンバなどが混生する森林環境が復元できた．また，寺林層最下部層～中部層下部の植物化石群は，冷温帯上部から亜寒帯に相当するやや乾燥した気候を示す．中部層上部では花粉化石においてモミ属，ツガ属，トウヒ属，カバノキ属の減少とブナ属とコナラ亜属の増加がみられ，より湿潤で温暖な気候への変化が示唆される．':
