Title: Orientation Dependence of Elastic Waves in Single Crystals
Abstract: A description of the properties of plane elastic waves in single crystals is of interest both from a theoretical point of view and in the interpretation of high-frequency pulsed ultrasound experiments. The perturbed eigenvalue problem that arises when nearly pure transverse or compressional modes are propagated is considered, and the resulting phase velocities and displacement vectors tabulated for a number of cases of physical interest. A unified approach to the properties of pure modes is provided through a consideration of individual rotational symmetries of the crystals, and the energy flux associated with both pure and nearly pure modes is discussed.
