Abstract: Abstract A review of: Elizabeth M. Bucar and Barbra Barnett, eds., Does Human Rights Need God? (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2005). 405 pp. $38.00. This book includes essays from a range of theological and political perspectives and examines the unfortunate habit within the global rights community of ignoring foundational issues of religion and worldview. The book's editors acknowledge the impracticality of coming to a consensus on the basis of human rights, but dialoguing about it is a helpful step toward a more successful human rights regime. A variety of religions contain the seeds of a robust prehension, protection, and promotion of human dignity, so rights activists will gain support if they understand and engage religious communities more effectively.
