Title: Preferred orientations of rigid particles in a viscous matrix deformed by pure shear and simple shear
Abstract: The behavior of a group of rigid particles embedded in a viscous material which is strained by pure shear and simple shear is investigated by considering the behavior of each of the individual particles in the system. The resulting behavior of the group is thus obtained. For a group of particles, randomly distributed, which are subjected to equivalent amounts of pure shear and simple shear strain, it was found that the resulting fabric for the two types of deformation could be quite different. For increasing pure shear deformation it was found that the degree of alignment of the particles increased monotonically. For increasing simple shear deformation the degree of alignment was found to oscillate. By considering only the final fabric it was not found possible to uniquely ascertain the type or amount of deformation.
