Title: Zwakke en sterke verleidingen: de invloed die de geschatte ongezondheid van een product heeft op zelfcontrole
Abstract: In our society obesity is a big problem and it causes lots of health problems. Many theories try to explain why we sometimes fail to overcome a temptation. Sometimes the confrontation with a temptation can activate self-regulation. Temptation strength may be an important factor in the activation of self-control. In this study participants were assigned to a weak or a strong temptation group. The participants in both conditions had to evaluate Bugles on unhealthiness. Temptation strength was manipulated by the size of the dishes. Expected was that participants in the strong temptation condition eat less compared to the participants in the weak temptation condition and that the participants in the strong temptation condition evaluate the Bugles as more unhealthy than the participants in the weak temptation condition. The results indicated that the evaluation of the product was significantly different between the two conditions. However, the participants in the two conditions did not significantly differ in the amount of eaten Bugles. More research is needed to fully understand the way in which temptation strength influences self-control.
