Title: Control of the Indian Mongoose Herpestes auropunctatus on St John, US Virgin Islands
Abstract: Introduced mongooses have negatively impacted native biota on Caribbean islands. Mongooses were trapped from January through November 1983 on St John, US Virgin Islands. Trapping efficiency averaged 0·39 mongoose per trap day, and decreased in successive retrapping periods. Mongoose populations in localised areas were dramatically lowered by repeated intensive trapping. A mean of 86% of trappable mongooses were caught during the first 5 days of trapping in each trapped area.
