Title: Formation of active ribosomal aggregates (polysomes) upon fertilization and development of sea urchin eggs
Abstract: Ribosomes from unfertilized eggs and developmental stages of Paracentrotus lividus and Lytechinus pictus have been fractionated in sucrose gradients. In the unfertilized eggs the ribosomes appear to be present mostly in the monosome condition, whereas shortly after fertilization ribosomal aggregates (polysomes) begin to be detectable. The amount of polysomes increases in the course of development. Pulse-labeling experiments support their identification as the active particles in amino acid incorporation.
