Title: Separation of catecholamines from catechol acids by alumina
Abstract: Abstract The factors affecting the adsorption of catechol derivatives on alumina have been studied. The results have permitted the reconciliation of conflicting literature reports. Catecholamines and catechol acids are adsorbed quantitatively on alumina at pH 4 only in the absence of ions and at pH 6 only in the absence of phosphate ions. At pH 8.5 quantitative adsorption in the presence of phosphate or other ions was confirmed. Based on the different elution characteristics of catecholamines and catechol acids a method was developed for the quantitative determination of dopamine and dopa, separately and together. The concentration of the catechol derivatives was determined by the method of Arnow modified for spectrophotometric analysis.
