Abstract: New means of environmental protection in Afghanistan are now fairly well developed in the law of the country, with five main environmental pillars to provide fundamental underpinnings to their new National Environmental Protection Agency. These pillars that have been established are: (1) environmental institutions and coordination; (2) environmental law and policy; (3) environmental impact assessment; (4) environmental information and assessment; and (5) community-based natural resource management. A set of so-called equator principles have been established to set standards for determining, assessing, and managing social and environmental risks in the financing of resource-exploitation projects.
