Title: Effects of monensin on ruminal fluid viscosity, pH, volatile fatty acids and ammonia levels, and microbial activity and population in healthy and bloated feedlot steers
Abstract: Zusammenfassung Der Einfluß von Monensin auf die Viskosität der Pansenflüssigkeit, den Pansen — pH, die Konzentration von flüchtigen Fcttsäuren und Ammoniak, die mikrobielle Besiedlung und Aktivität von blähsüchtigen und gesunden Mastrindern Der Zusatz von 40 ppm Monensin zum Futter führte bei blähsüchtigen Mastrindern zur Erhöhung des Futterverzehrs und der Gewichtszunahme. Ferner wircl bei Monensin‐Zu‐lage die Viskosität der Pansenflüssigkeit erniedngt. Es wurde kein Einfluß auf den pH‐Wert in der Pansenflüssigkeit und bei der in vitro ‐Gasproduktionsgeschwmdigkeit beob‐achtet. Ferner wird die Propionsäure‐Konzentration erhöht und die Konzentration an Es‐sigsäure und Ammoniak herabgesetzt. Die gesamte Anzahl an Ciliaten wird vermindert ohne Veränderung in der Zusammensetzung Ciliaten‐Population. Die Anzahl an gramne‐gativen kleinen Kokken und Stäbchen veränderte sich in der gewünschten Weise. Im Vergleich zu den blähsüchtigen Tieren zeigten gesunde Mastrinder eine geringere Viskosität des Pansensaftes, ein niedrigeres Propionat: Acetat‐Verhältnis und eine niedri‐gere NH 3 ‐Konzentration. Es wurden große Unterschiede in der Mikrobenpopulation von gesunden und blähsüchtigen Rindern festgestelk.
