Title: Research and development program of lithium battery in Japan
Abstract: The demand for electric power in Japan tends to increase year by year. In annual demand for electricity, peak demand is concentrated to three months in summer. This unbalance of demand through a year becomes a severe problem. Therefore, electric power storage technology is most necessary. The lithium battery is one of the ultimate batteries which has the highest theoretical energy density. Therefore, lithium batteries are regarded to be promising for developing the compact and lightweight batteries. This high performance advanced battery will be useful to develop the technology of battery energy storage for home use, stationary devices and electric vehicles. Considering this, we have started The Development of Dispersed-type Battery Energy Storage Technology' from FY 1992. We have studied the elemental technologies to develop high performance battery materials and optimized battery structure and manufacturing technology.
