Abstract: Abstract Plant breeding has led to the development of varieties which are highyielding but often susceptible to pathogens. Genetic material from the original wild ancestral species must be collected and incorporated, for further advances in plant breeding to occur. This article describes the work of the International Board for Plant Genetic Resources. The IBPGR was set up in 1974 to ensure that the genetic resources of important crop plants and other essential economic species are collected and conserved, and that the resources are made available to all who can use them for the benefit of humankind.
