Abstract: plants. The Nova Scotian kelp forest thinned out over the winter as kelp blades eroded and, presumably, as plants were dislodged during winter storms. Rapid kelp growth and recruitment resulted in the closure of the canopy shortly after. Surprisingly, there was no effect of understory seaweeds on the recruitment of L. longicruris, as shown for other kelp forests in southwestern Nova Scotia7.
