Kahler deals with the Jesus problem as it had arisen in the face of the growing importance of the historical-critical method in biblical studies, especially for the systematic theologian. […] He distinguishes, therefore, between the historical Jesus whom the eye of the historian perceives, and the Christ of faith, the "manifest God." The opponent who called for such a differentiation is represented by the life-of-Jesus literature of the nineteenth century. For Kiihler, the call came from those who sought to reconstruct an historical life of Jesus from the New Testament Gospels, with the aid of historical criticism.
