Title: Sc4T7Ge6 (T ≡; Rh, Ir, Os, Ru) and Sc4Ir7Si6 with the cubic U4Re7Si6-type structure
Abstract: Sc4Rh7Ge6 (formula weight, 1335.7) is cubic with space group Im3̄m and a = 8.1255(8) Å, V = 536.5(1) Å3, Z = 2 and Dx = 8.269 g cm−3, λ(MoKα) = 0.71069 Å, μ(MoKα) = 229.1 cm−1 and T = 293K. The crystal structure was determined on a single crystal and was refined to an R value of 0.056 for 99 independent reflections. Sc4T7Ge6 (T ≡; Ir, Os, Ru) and Sc4Ir7Si6 have the same crystal structure which is known as the U4Re7Si6 structure type. The structure can be described as a partially filled deformed Cu3Au-type arrangement with the scandium atoms on the gold sites, some of the rhodium and all the germanium atoms ordered on the copper sites and the remainder of the rhodium atoms on interstitial octahedral sites according to the formula Sc4(Rh6Ge6)Rh. Rare earth, scandium and yttrium transition metal silicides and germanides adopt the U4Re7Si6-type structure when the ratio of the radius of the minority atom to the radius of the transition element is small (less than 1.28); derivatives of the BaAl4 structure occur otherwise.
