A. Abstract Accretion disk models which involve a 10 to the 12th K ion gas result in abundant pion production through proton-proton collisions. The pions produce neutrinos, gamma-rays, positrons, and electrons. The gamma-ray luminosity from this mechanism alone can be large. The distribution of positrons and electrons is peaked at an energy of 35 MeV, with up to a few percent in a high-energy tail up to 1 GeV. This high-energy tail is due to the Penrose process. These particles contain enough energy to explain the compact nuclear radio source, or perhaps to be the source of matter in the extended lobes of radio galaxies, if Coulomb and annihilation losses in the disk and severe Compton losses can be overcome.
