Title: Economic crisis or transformation? South Africa's economy in the late 1980s
Abstract: In discussions about South Africa's economic prospects the focus usually falls upon a wide range of contemporary problems which seem to interact in such a way that future economic growth and development is seriously in doubt. Too little attention is given to comparative perspectives, revealing parallels between South Africa and other semi‐developed upper‐middle income countries. All of these experience far‐reaching structural changes in the socio‐economic and socio‐political spheres, with many of the apparently critical issues merely reflecting such adjustments. Policy makers face the challenge of designing and implementing appropriate policies to strengthen this transformation process.
