Title: Topside electron density distribution during sunrise and sunset conditions at Arecibo: Comparison with IRI
Abstract: The topside electron density profiles for sunrise and sunset conditions measured with incoherent scatter radar at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, for the period August 1974 to May 1977 are compared with IRI. About 140 Ne-h profiles have been used in the analysis. We have studied the altitude variation of N/NmF2 against (h - hmF2) for sunrise and sunset period covering all seasons. It is observed that for sunrise conditions the IRI overestimates the topside electron density during all seasons. During sunset conditions the IRI also generally overestimates electron density with occasional exceptions. Similar results have earlier been reported for midday and midnight conditions from the Arecibo measurement (Pandey et al., 1996).
