Title: Department of Energy national spent-fuel management plan
Abstract: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) holds title to a large quantity of spent nuclear fuel. This spent fuel includes a wide variety of fuel types, and most of the material is highly enriched uranium. Degraded fuel and obsolete storage facilities have raised concerns regarding continued safe storage. A National Spent-Fuel Management Plan has been developed and a policy established to resolve this concern and define and ensure resolution of all associated issues for the characterization, safe storage, and proper disposition of this material. This paper discusses elements of the plan being directed by DOE headquarters.
