Title: Viral Pathogenesis during Experimental Pseudorabies Keratoconjunctivitis in the Pig
Abstract: For study of the pathogenesis of eye lesions caused by pseudorabies virus (Herpesvirus suis) in pigs, an experimental self-limiting keratoconjunctivitis characterized by corneal ulcers and persistent opacities was produced by placing virulent virus directly on traumatized corneas. Quantitative viral assay of anterior eye material showed an increase in viral titer through postinoculation day (PID) 3 followed by a decline through PID 7; no virus was detected on PID 10 or thereafter. Neutralizing antibody was first detected in serum on PID 7, increased in titer to PID 21–23, and then persisted at lower levels. Virus persisted in the tear film through PID 18. Experimental pseudorabies keratoconjunctivitis in the pig resembles the deeper forms of herpes simplex keratitis in man and in the rabbit.
