Title: Growth and mortality in juvenile flatfish: The design of optimal sampling programmes
Abstract: Abstract The ability to measure flatfish growth and mortality rates from field data greatly depends upon the original sampling design. Frequently, researchers fail to adequately define or specify the area they intend their samples to represent, and confidence limits around the resultant data might be too broad to detect differences among estimates of numbers or length made over biologically meaningful time scales. A simple statistical technique is reviewed to calculate the number of samples required to detect a specified change in number or length with stated confidence limits. Modifications in the sampling protocol are suggested to reduce sample variance to an acceptable level.
