Title: John Vanderpant: A modernist vision of Canada
Abstract: Abstract The new thrusting skylines of urban centres, the advent of innovative engineering expressions bursting with the optimism of a booming industry, the shifting role of the worker in the surge of a technological tidal wave are dynamic symbols which pulsate throughout the photographic production of John Vanderpant (1884–1939), Canada's leading Pictorialist photographer. Vanderpant's gallery in Vancouver, British Columbia, was a locus for emerging movements in painting, photography and art theory on the West Coast during the 1920s and 1930s. His lectures, publications and workshops, his sponsorship of international and local photographic exhibitions, and his active participation in the development of the local arts community situate the photographer as an important figure in exploring and disseminating trends in contemporary art movements in Canada during this period.
