Title: Linear and nonlinear strategies in computer-based writing
Abstract: The claim that computers give rise to nonlinear writing is critically examined. Studies of revising at the computer have pointed to a largely linear mode of production. A problem in previous research has been that robust methods have been lacking for the assessment of comprehensive writing patterns with a computer. A new computer-based research tool, s-NOTATION, is presented that can automatically trace a writer's revisions to a text in their natural order. An ongoing study is presented that applies this method to assess the effect of the writing task on the linearity of text production.
