Abstract: The importance of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its relationship with the metabolic syndrome is now increasingly recognized, and this has stimulated an interest in the possible role of NAFLD in the development of atherosclerosis. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease as a determinant of cardiovascular disease: Response to TargherAtherosclerosisVol. 190Issue 1PreviewWe thank Dr. Targher for his valuable comments [1], concerning our recent article [2], in which we demonstrated a positive association of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), a surrogate marker of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), with 10-year incident coronary heart disease (CHD) events in a population based study (Hoorn Study). This association was independent of classical risk factor and the components of the metabolic syndrome. In contrast, the associations with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality were not significant after adjustment for these risk factors. Full-Text PDF
